Kendall Wallace Doesn't Waste Words

... the council went back to the Legislature and hired Sen. B. Joseph Tully, who held the job for about seven years, a period of tremendous growth in the city, led by Wang Labs. 

Tully’s assistant, James Campbell, was quickly promoted by the council and led efforts to build all new elementary and middle schools in the city, some replacing 100-year-old buildings. It was a time when the state paid 90 percent of the cost. 

After Campbell, the council again decided to go out of town and hired Richard Johnson, who was the sitting mayor of Taunton. Johnson served a couple of years and his assistant city manager, Brian Martin, was named city manager. 

Martin served in another very interesting time in Lowell and at the urging of U.S. Sen. Paul Tsongas, launched the efforts to build the baseball park and the arena. 

Again, when Martin left, the council went to a guy with legislative experience and hired John Cox, who had become a power in the Legislature and had been very helpful in securing funds for Lowell projects. 

After Cox resigned, the city did an extensive search and nearly hired the first woman for the job, a woman who was on the staff at UMass Lowell. It appeared she had the job until her interview did not go well and Lynch hit the ball out of the park in his final interview with the council. 

I'll go out on a limb and say this is Kendall's nod to Eileen Donoghue.
