Mike Geary and the 7-10 Split

A 7-10 Split

I fully support the succinct action of the City Council to appoint City Clerk Mike Geary to be the 'Acting City Manager,' starting Noon, March 10, 2014 (Link).

Admittedly, my support comes from a rather petty political place in my heart. Having listened to umpteen snorts from various candidates, now Councilors, about how they weren't 'rubber stamps' and 'the manager worked for the Council,' I'm tickled pink that this crew is finally thrust into the front seat, behind the wheel.

That said, I'll bestow a hat tip to said blowhards; as they are, by picking Geary, truly stepping up to the plate. They are not shirking their duties. With Geary as 'Acting City Manager,' this Council OWNS everything that transpires until the next City Manager is picked and seated.

Further, I am impressed with the finesse the Council displayed by shimmying the narrow straights created by various political forces that wanted, either, an 'interim' City Manager appointed (Bob Healy) or a nod to a popular Department Head. There would be nothing but lingering sour grapes, had the Council arm wrestled between picking between Tom Bellegarde or Susan LeMay. Each would have supporters that would never accept the choice of another. So, by giving the nod to Geary, the Council steered clear of parochial icebergs and took the helm of municipal stewardship in one fell swoop.

But, this is only the first frame ...

What happens, if Mike Geary applies for the City Manager position?

Can this Council use Geary to split the difference between Eileen Donoghue and Kevin Murphy?

The likelihood of a gutter ball is much greater with this throw. The approach must be exquisite.
