On WCAP, this morning, Corey Belanger asserted the South Common site was the best place for a new high school to be built.
In the same breaths, Belanger also labored to prove out that students going to and fro from school are deleterious for most of the business in the DT. If we take that as gospel, Sal Lupoli is gonna be pretty pissed about moving the LHS to South Common. Twice a day, pedestrian students will stream, from the Highlands and South Lowell, like lemmings, past the Thorndike miracle.
Or, just maybe, the student rush hours hold a promise of riches for those in the right place, selling the right stuff?
By fronting the South Common location, Belanger has tied himself to Lupoli. But, is it by a "brass ring" or an "albatross?"

So C Belanger wants to put the high school where the expanded trolley tracks are to run through and where a school under consideration for reopening lies. Let's say the high school gets moved there. Then we'd have to find another location to build a grade school to make up for the Rogers School being demolished.
Does anyone really think the MSBA is going to give Lowell an extra 45 million because of a risky economic development play?
WCAP's John MacDonald said he's never seen *new construction* cost more than rehabbing old buildings. He's probably right. When businesses build buildings most build them as cheap as possible to reduce costs and maximize roi. AKA disposable buildings.
The dirty secret at Wal-Mart is the buildings are meant to last 15years. Meanwhile the taxpayer pays for road and traffic improvements(like for Target Tanner/Plain St)to generate low paying crap jobs, with no local ownership, that help destroy small business in downtown Lowell.
Has John MacDonald ever built a school that lasts for generations and is centrally located to educate all of Lowell's students?
This debate is all just a colossal waste of time and energy.
